On the ground with gig workers in India, and I helped one of India's biggest (and best?) home delivery (started with fresh produce and moved on to almost everything) outfits in its early days.

What would really help gig workers in India, especially those on 2-wheelers, given that a large number are from other towns/States, and therefore living on their own?

1) A change in rules regarding usage of personal 2-wheelers for delivery work. Otherwise, every outing on the roads is a technical offence. These rules would include (for better safety/stability and riders health) side-saddle saddle-bags/panniers (as seen on Despatch Rider motorcycles in the Services/Forces) instead of back-packs or back-seat mounted boxes.

2) A clothes washing (for uniforms) and a bike wash (for 2-wheelers) facility. Not an allowance. A facility somewhere in the same area as the pick-up/warehouse/restaurant points.

3) Compulsory certification in First Aid. Compulsory proper ISI marked helmets, provided 2x a year.

4) Free battery scooter charging, either by the service providor or via the City/State Government, for an amount approximately equal to the distance covered in a month. I am told that gig workers in the delivery business put in around 200kms per day - multiply by 25, and that's 5000kms per month. We as citizens need to be thankful to gig workers who use battery 2-wheelers.

There are more -but we need to start somewhere?

Sharp framing on the exits and backstops part. That Burger King buzzer detail lands because it shows how even absurd pressure can feel manageable when theres a way out. I worked retail one summer where every shift felt endless, but knowing it was temporary made the grind bearable. The structural youth bulge problem is what alot of commentary sidesteps when arguing about platform wages.
